Is Therapy Right for Me?
Therapy can sometimes stir up feelings that are hard to handle, and you might even feel hesitant about returning or tempted to not continue.
If you find yourself feeling this way, consider these steps:
- Discuss your feelings at the beginning of your next session. Let your therapist know how you felt after the last one. They're there to listen and support you. Writing down your thoughts beforehand might help.
- Talk to someone you trust, like a friend, family member, or a listening service, to process your emotions.
- Journal your feelings between sessions. Writing things down can help you understand your thoughts and experiences from therapy.
- Treat yourself by planning something enjoyable after each session to help you relax and feel grounded.
It's normal to experience a variety of emotions after a therapy session. For instance, you might feel:
- Relieved if you’ve shared something significant and felt heard and understood.
- Energized if you've gained new insights about yourself or set a fresh goal to work on.
- Exhausted if the session was particularly challenging or emotionally draining.
- Frustrated if the session didn’t meet your expectations or you didn’t feel heard.
- Upset or overwhelmed if the session triggered difficult or painful memories and emotions
